City of Wiltz in the Chinese news: circular economy for sustainable growth

The City of Wiltz, hometown of BBI Luxembourg, has started in 2015 the process of becoming the expert center of circular economy. They are now carying the title of "Circular Economy Hotspot" for Luxembourg.

Following this example, BBI Luxembourg, will introduce a new course subject into its redesigned Master degree in International Hospitality & Tourism Management. "Sustainable Development & Innovation" will look, among others, at how the circular economy model can be translated towards hospitality and tourism. Within this sector, one of the key development criteria will be to preserve what we have for the future.

But what is Circular Economy to begin with?

Looking beyond the current take-make-waste extractive industrial model, a circular economy aims to redefine growth, focusing on positive society-wide benefits. It entails gradually decoupling economic activity from the consumption of finite resources, and designing waste out of the system. Underpinned by a transition to renewable energy sources, the circular model builds economic, natural, and social capital. It is based on three principles:

  • Design out waste and pollution
  • Keep products and materials in use
  • Regenerate natural systems
